Yes. There are all kinds of variables, not the least of which is
personal preference. The texture of the semi-gloss/luster/pearl papers
that bothered me when making 11 x 14 prints for the portfolios, I'm sure
would disappear completely as the scale of the images got larger. I'm
looking at a blank sheet of Museo Silver Rag, right now, that has a
beautiful surface, but last fall I opted for Hahnemuhle Fine Art Pearl
instead because the surface texture was finer than the Museo, before
doing the final printing on Enhanced mat to avoid the surface entirely.
What I thought would come down to a quantitative decision in favor of
shadow detail and saturation, ended up being quite qualitative when I
chose the matte. Now, my intention is to check out a broader spectrum
of papers before settling on a few and making profiles. I just know
that I'm still using a camera, not a brush, so I don't want canvas-
textured or water color paper, or other organic-looking stock that soaks
up ink, and detail, like a sponge.
It's interesting, what you say about checking for optical brighteners.
Is this a personal taste, or is it a profiling issue? To me, it seems,
that there is a strong degree of impress-the-client built into them - an
eye-popping dose of MSG. But then, that's popular. Usually, after
walking through something like an Art Fair, let's say, I have a strong
desire to suggest to Adobe that they remove Hue/Saturation from the menu
commands. ...or at least not allow its use without adult supervision.
Right now, I'm just looking for suggestions of a good smooth-surfaced
paper to try. You know, somewhere between ink-sucking and razzle-dazzle.
