After posting my original request for paper-opinions last fall, I got a
lot of recommends for HFA Pearl, and I bought a box. It's a nice sheet,
with the smoothest texture, in my opinion, of all the non-matte papers I
tried - definitely preferable to the Epson SemiGloss that I had been
using, and a finer (texture) sheet than Museo Silver Rag, another paper
that has many fans. I think I'll take Andrew's suggestion and invest in
a black light, at the very least, for curiosity's sake. If there isn't
a benchmark for UV comparison yet, I can offer up some of my old Jimi
Hendrix posters.
Some questions: Andrew... What's your OB-Checker? Is this a hardware
store assemblage?
Q2: There's artificial flavoring and then there's artificial flavoring,
and I'm assuming that one manufacturer's MSG isn't the same as
another's, or even that they enhance different papers within their own
lines in the same way. What becomes good or bad (or better or worse) in
these respects, without feeling the need to go Vegan in order to obviate
the indecision.
Q3: Given that all this takes place on a paper base, is there any value
to flipping the sheet to see what the starting point for the final
coated & treated paper brightness is. Heavy makeup on a dull sheet
should send up some warning flags.
And then there's...
>So, obviously then, not for the fine art B&W, which is what this was
all about.
Those B&W boys sure have an attitude, don't they?
