Good thoughts. No it wouldn't be too difficult to make a photoshop
script or even a droplet. In my case, I would have to assign my monitor
profile since they were created in that space, and convert to sRGB,
save. The issue is with saving a JPG without loss and without taking on
weight! Since I always used the same value which is 70, I guess that
re-saving with the same value shouldn't damage the images too much I
hope, but of course with the additional color conversion, we will see...
People always told me to use sRGB and to save without profile, but of
course with Netscape, this was not beneficial. With Safari though, the
answer I was waiting for seems to have been available for a long time!
Never mind...
Thanks!

Right. The ONLY true color corrected web browser is Safari, any
profile embedded in an image will be displayed correctly (be it
sRGB, A98 or CM). For our proofing purposes (on our sheetfed and web
presses) I've converted the proofs to tagged sRGB PNG's inside a php
web page / folder browser. We bought a Mac Mini and a 23" Apple
Cinema Display, mounted them on some Chief VESA wall mounts and gave
them a mouse. An existing Xserve was used to do the conversion (as
well as our RIP), and it is working pretty damn great (if I may say
so myself). The website is available for viewing for content, but
when viewed by any calibrated Mac in Safari the color is dead-on.
It shouldn't be to bad to convert your images to tagged sRGB. You
have a few hammers and screwdrivers in your tool belt to assemble
something useful. Using the shell's SIPS or Applescript's Image
Utility (same things) you can create traverse a folder opening any
JPEG, GIF or PNG. Then check to see if there is a profile. If there
is then convert to sRGB. If no profile is embedded, then just assign
the sRGB profile.
It would definitely be quicker to work on a script for a day than to
try to go through every folder of every site (depending on how many
you have). You could also do a photoshop action to do the same
thing. Open. Assign Profile. Save As to a new location. Close.
I tested the PC side and found the same limitations that you did.
All images whether they had a profile or not were viewed exactly the
same! How annoying! I didn't test it with Vista yet, but we did
test it with XP and I.E. 7 (I believe). The PC guy didn't like the
fact the Mac could do something the PC couldn't so he was grumpy
about revealing the limitations.
Anyways. Sorry for rambling.
Good luck!
