I am well aware of Bill's landbreaking work. I corresponded with him
about the way to read HUGE target strips into the DTP70.
Thing is, I place smoothness before color accuracy for my own photo
work, and I tend to give others what I myself like most. Color breaks
in faces are unforgivable.
Small patch sets -eg the standard 343 Xrite target- yield very smooth
profiles with decent shadow detail.
Anyway, reading a few thousand patches with the iSis XT is much easier
now thanks to its huge maw and bar coded targets.
The issue is not only whether the software you use makes better
profiles with these larger targets but also whether the pain of
printing and shipping them is worth it. When you are a consultant you
need to be sure that you really get stuff printed at the same time,
and that it gets to you in decent shape, so large sheets are out (for
me) and multi-sheets carry the risk that the user prints them with
different paper batches, settings etc.

Bill Atkinson would disagree with you, and he's built a lot of RGB
inkjet printer profiles.
