Color management in PNG is pretty messed up - different readers and writers
implement different bits of the standard, and the standard has changed quite
a bit as it developed.
For many reasons, PNG is not a good archival format (most notably that your
bits are quite likely to get changed going between applications!).
I'd recommend using TIFF as the archival format (more universally
understood, good compression with ZIP/FLATE, better defined color
management).
If you want perfect long term archivability, there are some good standards
based around PDF, but they tend not to compress at all (to make them easier
to read in the far future).
