Bob,
I assume you want to make RGB profiles. I am not qualified to give
opinions about CMYK.
With the i1 you need the measurement tablet and slider, otherwise
false readings will often make for a bad profile.
The i1 RGB software that takes targets with a few hundred patches
actually uses the PMP engine and is good, but I don't know how much
the upgrade is, relatively to what you have. I've lost rack of
Xrite's marketing.
Frankly, if I had the spectro and was happy with it I'd figure out a
way to get the upgrade at a reasonable price. Talk to Steve Upton at
Chromix.
The software which used to come with Pulse uses the Monaco engine I
believe, and this is also very good. I don't know how the software can
be used independently of Pulse, although the free Colorport utility
can probably be used for this. There are some cheap used Pulse
packages out there.
Basiccolor sell some profiling packages; I haven't used them but they
have demos which are time-limited so you can makes some profiles and
decide for yourself.
The Spyder guys' software is also getting good reviews *for inkjets*
. I never managed to wangle a sample out of them, but you might ask
them whether it can work with your spectro, which is at least as good
as theirs.

Since I don't have enough arms and legs to afford ProfileMaker, and iMatch
is not good enough, what is recommended to work with my i1 photo and give
better results than iMatch and still leave me some limbs?
