Rich's advice is one perfectly workable solution. It may not provide enough
visual "depth" (or dynamic range), though, since it uses only one ink. Also,
it may look "grainy" to a sharp eye, because the line screen for the black
is not mixing with the line screens from the other 3 process colors. Mixing
the black ink with the other process colors helps tone down the apparent
"graininess" of the results.
The other solution, as has been stated by several other people here besides
myself, is to use a high GCR in your profile -- which would mean that you
would have to re-build a custom high-GCR version of the target profile. You
can do that using ProfileMaker, for example, and setting the separation
parameters in its interface to your tastes.
If you have never done that and would like to try, feel free to contact me
off-list and I'll provide more details on how that is done.
One last thing: it would seem to me that, before you decide somewhat
arbitrarily how much total ink is desirable to you, you should ask your
print provider/separators what TAC (Total Area Coverage, which is another
way to refer to the Total Ink Limit) is acceptable on the magazine paper
stock on which the image is going to be printed. In other words, you should
not build a file with a 315% TAC if the paper stock can only safely hold a
maximum of 300%.
