That doesn't seem to have stopped you from hacking Spyder support into your
products, Graeme. <G>
I guess those of us working on supporting non mainstream computing
platforms are used to hardware manufactures being indifferent, and
not particularly co-operative in assisting those efforts. It's more
unusual to come across a manufacturer that's hostile, and seems
to have an aggressive attitude in wanting to control everything
about their product, even after it's been sold to a customer
("authorized software products only" etc.).
I'm prepared to help the former in spite of themselves, I'm
more reluctant to help the latter. It was only in the process
of completing support for the Spyder 2 that I realized that
DataColor appears to me now to fall into the latter camp, after
(quite mistakenly) thinking that as a smaller player in the
color instrument world, they might be encouraging of
wider support for their instruments. That's OK,
but it's just like the graphics card situation - if you
are not using MSWindows or OS X and want a well supported
graphics driver, choose an Intel graphics chip, because
they are actively supporting X11. Second choice is AMD/ATI,
because they've just decided to support X11 with interface
specifications and developers. Last choice is NVidia, because
they remain uncooperative (but at least determinedly neutral
about the attempts to reverse engineer drivers for their
products).
Linux may never make it as a viable desktop platform, but
it is steadily increasing in popularity, and in regard to
professional graphics applications, is in a chicken and egg
situation which can only be overcome with some effort.
I think that effort is rewarding.
Graeme Gill.
