On a Mac you can Control-click on the background and select a custom
color for your background, It's sticky for that particular screen mode
too, so just set your second one to grey.
It's nice once in a blue moon when, in the company of such august and
clever practitioners of science & craft, one can offer a simple clear
solution, however cosmetic.
