The issue of who's spectophotometer to use can be a tough one to answer.
In the case of an HP printers with the built in spectros, my experinece is
that it really helps to have the right RIP driving the printer and the
spectro. These days its GMG. And IMHO today, that is one of the right
choices for any inkjet system that requires repeatable process control.
As for answering the question: is a built in spectro a good thing? There
seems to be no question about it. Having an on board spectro is a good bang
for the buck, especially if the RIP can produce calibration updates
automatically.
In the case of GMG you can set the RIP to recalibrate at say 4 am. When the
operator comes in at 7am. The RIP is ready to go even if there were multiple
iterations.
Today, and we all hope this will change, the HP is just slow. Especially
when compared to an Epson. So now the choice of automatic recalibration vs a
faster printer can be a tough decision.
And then there are color matching issues. From my tests and other colleagues
color matching is not the issue at least between the Epson and the HPz
series. I am sure mileage will vary.
I think there is more to this story, but I am sure others will tell it.
(right Terry).
Time is short right now.
