Yes, I experimented with this using paint chips supplied by the artist's highlighting department. I had a grayscale painted for me to add to the chips. The profile looked good but I did not have the time to test it on too many live paintings. It was an option we did not use since we ended up beta testing HP Artist camera repro software.
I will mention that I am a stickler for proper camera curves though. When correct, my camera curve will closely yield the RGB values of the color chart I am photographing (with and without profile applied ideally) and look visually close when printed. I feel that when the calibration is optimal, the profile mainly has to adjust hues. I also take this approach with scanners which usually reproduce images dark and pink casted out-of-the-box.
Another time I set up a scanner program for a client supplied color chart made by colored pencils for a calendar they were having us print. By profiling the scanner to their hues, we saved a lot of retouching time and rejected proofs when the 13 calendar drawings arrived.
You young fellers have no idea how good you have it with these high-falluten spectrophotmeters to read color by the numbers. I certainly do not miss creating drum scanner color programs (profiles) by eye anymore.

Have you done this yourself? Can you speak about the results?
