I work at a large Web printers

they do not play an active role during the colour match. Due to our work
load it is impractical to read hundreds of proofs daily
Having said that, we have read the wedges of proofs that have caused press
issues , it can also be a useful tool in any post mortem.
As a process control we are always more comfortable going to press with
proofs that have a recognisable media wedge.
A recognisable wedge does give us a visual check with regard to grey balance
Proofs that have a wedge usually come from sources that understand the
importance of calibration and therefore give us some confidences in their
quality control
