Conceptually, its flawed in the context of what the end users are expecting
from the process. We discussed this off line and Chris Murphy nailed the
issues to a T. We are unfortunately (in this context) mixing up
colorimetrically correct results from proper color appearance of which the
current technology, (based on measuring single color patches, not in context
to the image where color appearance IS necessary) in providing information
to the user about the so called accuracy or the results they hope to achieve
from the calibration and profiling process. Its a feel good button.
The exact quote of Chris, which I think is spot on was this:

Some geeks by and large like the idea of solid color numbers and their
measurement values. That's great if you're viewing solid colors. Most of us
are viewing millions of color colors which end up producing an image. I find
just looking at images tells me a lot about the color management process.
Viewing the same numbers over time (not validation but trending) lets me
know statistically how the device remains consistent. I do want the same RGB
or CMYK values to produce the same color appearance over time. But they
don't have to be that far off before I can spot them visually, without the
need of measuring one or a few dozen of the millions of colored squares.
