I remember some years back there was a rather detailed email discussion
about film and the maximum resolution film was capable of. This goes back a
few years and I don't have references but I recall there being a wide range
of numbers due to film types, film sizes, ISO ratings and even the lenses
used.
Bottom line was a number of about 5000 DPI was about the top end of the
consensus. A 4x5 scanned at 5000 DPI would yield a 20000 x 25000 pixel file.
You might want to adjust that 5000 number down if you feel your film was not
exceptional in all respects.
Obviously you would have to have a scanner that could scan at those
resolutions without interpolation with your sizes of film.
Depending on the amount of printing you need to do you might want to
consider buying the printer. Most of the output costs will be in printing
not scanning and you can get something like the Epson 11880 for under $14K
that prints 64 inches wide.
