Don't confuse a CRT recorder with an LVT. Resolutions on them are not
comparable. We still output to both and the LVT is much sharper at a
lower resolution. It's a similar situation when you compare flat bed
against drum scan, the difference being that one records line by line
and the other pixel by pixel with a big difference in the optical path
and the amount of flare.
The LVT resolutions most appropriate for film are res 40, 48 and 60
although it's also capable of res 80 and some units go to 120, but these
last two really don't show any improvement over res 60, which for the
unwashed among us is 600 pixels per cm. It depends on the film to some
extent, but res 40 on an LVT is much sharper than 8k or 16k on a CRT
recorder in spite of the enormous difference in file size.

Hmmm. I'm not sure that's correct. Back in the film recorder day you
could image at 2k or 4K to 35mm film and you certainly could see the
difference between 2048 DPI and 4096 DPI on 35mm film. Heck that was
imaging with a CRT too.
Didn't the LVT have res 60 and 90 as well?
