I have been scanning chromes since 1986 for retouching. Here are two rules
of thumb: 1. Scan for the highest resolution necessary to see no pixilation
at the size to be used. This provides a scan useful only for the particular
application. 2. If you want a scan that makes maximum use of the
transparency for any purpose, scan to a res that recreates all the grain in
the original film. This is usually between 1000 and 2000 dpi, but scanner
sharpness is different from one brand to another, so you have to test it to
see if the grain is visible.

We usually did the latter, but it makes for big files!

Dear Friends of Colorsync,

I should like to inquire if any of you have knowledge of the highest
resolution scan capabilities of 4x5" chrome in terms of ease of color
correction and "best" or optimal final output size at 300 dpi.
(Example: 500%, 5,000%, etc.) This project is two and three dimensional
fine-art reproduction.

Also I wish to ask if any of you know of service bureaus that provide
archival output on paper 60+ inches wide with either pigment based inks
or solvent based oil colors (wide gamut). Thanks for any help you may
be.

With highest regards,

Frederick Park
