Why don't you send us a link to the review, or mail interested
parties a sample, I'll be delighted to look at it.
Unfortunately, since the publishing house makes its money from selling
these articles, I cannot currently give away the review; but PDFs of
individual articles are available for Euro 1.50 or so on
www.maclife.de. But, again: it's in German!
But this is the smaller problem. The bigger problem is that even for
50 pages, the wealth of material had to be extremely condensed. That's
kind of OK for a general interest magazine, but I certainly have more
detailed information that could be of interest for members of this
list. So what I'd like to do is publish the material on my web site
later this year. (I'll be allowed to do this by then; currently, I'm
still working on subsequent parts of the review; two are published so
far, the third is written.) God knows if I'll really manage to do
that. I surely hope so, but as always, it's a question of time,
resources etc. In case I don't, maybe I can at least post the mere
test results to this list in some abbreviated form; some results were
really surprising (at least for me).
If you wrote software, GPLing the code and putting it on an archive
somewhere might help as well.
Of course, but again, it would need quite some editing to be of
general use (or even understandable ;-) ).
On a sidenote, it's clear that outside reviewers have more effect on
the industry than consultants;
This may have a good and a bad side to it:
The reviewer comes from the outside and sees things wish fresh eyes,
whereas the consultant has much more practical knowledge, of course.
As regards the miserable user-experience dispensed by color-
management tools, an Automated Workflow working group has been
formed in the ICC; you would certainly be welcome there.
I doubt I'd be experienced enough for a task like this, but some basic
and obvious issues can't probably be solved by a task force, anyway:
just look at my other thread (alas, with no replies so far) titled "So
what does Preview.app *really* do when softproofing?" What I describe
there is that 6 different methods of performing seemingly exactly the
same profile matches lead to 6 slightly different results (!). I think
this inconsistency is the most confusing aspect of all. If simply
everything worked consistently, a new user could come a long way just
by trying things and finding out what leads to different results and
what doesn't. As it stands now, he can never be sure if he did
something wrong, or if it's "just" another inconsistency he
encounters. This extremely slows down the process of acquiring
(implicit) knowledge by (consistent) experience. You don't need a task
force to realize this, but seeing the problem obviously does not mean
it's as good as solved in this specific case.
Bye
Uli
