Hello list,
Some more thoughts about the Gamma 1,8 issues an Mac OS X:
If Apple would support open international standards on a color managed
OS, it would be no problem to implement following steps:
- make the standard RGB-profile for untagged data choosable for the
professional users on system level "ColorSync Preferences Panel"
(several colormanagement professionals are asking for this since years...)
- make sRGB_IEC61699.icc the standard-profile for untagged RGB data, to
be compatible to all relevant international standards for untagged
RGB-data in digital imaging (stills and motion pictures)
- change the recommendation for monitor calibration from Gamma 1,8 to 2,2
As most Apple apps embedd profiles during saving a file, content with
embbeded profiles representing a Gamma of 1,8 will be corrected for the
display calibrated to a Gamma of 1,8.
For users, which still prefer the Gamma of 1,8 for untagged RGB-data and
for monitor calibration, they would be able to choose e.g. AppleRGB as
standard profile in a renewed "ColorSync Preferences Panel"
It is the choice of Apple to serve the professional imaging community
and also the digital imaging prosumers by implementing international
standard for digital imaging correctly or to mess up their customers by
forcing them to a legacy Gamma of 1,8
Regards
Jan-Peter
