Best tip I've read on calibrating a mac laptop screen came from robgalbraith.

I have one of the "bad" second generation pre-LED macbook pros. I had very poor results before trying the calibrate at full brightness then turn it down technique. It works. It's still a pretty mediocre screen but is semi-usable now. I also agree that the old macbook was better.
