Hi Roger,
I did not pick a specific luminance or white point. I used "Profile
Only" using Monaco Optix. I ran it once to find the brightness
setting for approximately 110 cd/m2. It's a little past half way.
Then I turned the brightness all the way up and ran the calibration
again profile only. This time it came in at 180/90 (something like
that) then I turned the brightness down again to the 110 point.
Sounds inaccurate but does work much better. I was thinking that
given the limited gamut of the macbook screen maybe the colorimeter
can't get an accurate reading at less than full or near full
brightness. Or maybe these screens are designed to be set high? It's
really not that great. I use my laptop in dual screen mode quite
often and there are contrast and saturation shifts when dragging an
image one to the other. You also have to get the viewing angle just
right. But when I show it to my boss who uses a Thinkpad he thinks it
looks great. Now that screen is hopeless. My last laptop was a 15"
powerbook. The screen was much dimmer (especially after 3 years of 5
to 9 hours of daily use) and lower resolution but had a warmer native
temp and a better viewing angle. In the end I think you can only
expect so much from a laptop screen. It's easily to be disappointed
when you know what a decent screen is capable of.
Take Care,
David
