If anyone is interested, here is how this fizzled out, very strange. To show the look of finished art on the web I was converting images to the output profiles then converting to sRGB using Absolute Colormetric to maintain paper hue in the pieces. Now my presumption is that this then is a white point problem with some of the output profiles?
BUT- this is the stumbling block. They displayed fine in Adobe, there was no indication of any problem at all, including thumbnails. Until it was on the web and viewed with Safari there was no clue, then further testing revealed Preview displayed them badly too.
So here is the strange solution. The various apps are displaying differently not because of the existing profile (now sRGB and tagged as such) but because of how it was converted TO the existing profile. If the files are converted Absolute Colormetric to an intermediate profile, say ARGB, THEN to sRGB with Relative, or I presume Perceptual, they display as expected in all apps. SO that is what I did.
SO the difference between how the apps displayed them was not due to the profile as tagged, but how the image was converted to that profile.
Very odd, and who is correct? Apple or Adobe?
Uli, if I open one of the tagged images displaying badly in Preview, and re-assign the very space it's already tagged as, it's is now correct as well. Obviously redundant, but clearly you are on to something too.

Any advice is very appreciated.
Thank you.

Stay away from the Mac? I know it's crazy to say that :(

Unless you start building your own apps and make the system calls yourself.
