Any other suggestions?

I personally like to use clamshell mode and find switching in and out of clamshell mode to be flawless in terms of ColorSync profiles and icon position as long as the following procedure is followed:

To enter clamshell mode and connect to external display:

Start with a closed, sleeping laptop.
Connect power cable.
Connect all other cables (the order is not important).
Connecting any USB port will wake up the computer.

To leave clamshell mode and disconnect from external display:

Open the laptop screen.
Select "Detect Displays" from the Displays menu bar (requires that you check the "Show displays in menu bar" checkbox in the Displays System Preference Pane)
Then quickly yank the video cable while it is still detecting (this will move all windows and icons over so you won't loose anything)
Disconnect all other cables (order is not important)
Shut laptop to put it to sleep.
