So, with a device link, gamut compression would be calculated directly between the two color spaces?
It /can/ be calculated that way with the right tools.
It is exactly the gamut mapping philosophy in argyllCMS (for both device
and device link profiles): "Argyll will by default use the gamut defined
by the source profile perceptual table to create the gamut mapping of
the destination perceptual table, and the source saturation table to
make the destination saturation table." [1]
"the gamut mapped, inverse AtoB table linking method [...] is generally
the most accurate, smooth and flexible linking method [...]. There is an
optional argument, which is a source gamut to use instead of that of the
source profile. This is to allow optimizing the gamut mapping to a
source gamut of a particular image, which can give slightly better
results that gamut mapping from the gamut of the source colorspace. Such
a source image gamut can be created using the tiffgamut utility." [2]
There is a nice GUI application under way that combines the steps of
calculating the source gamut of an image, creating the device link
profile and applying it. [3]
