In the past days I had access to the new Apple Cinema Display 24 LED and I
was curious what kind of technology Apple is using for it. It looked obvious
that for a 899 $ price point no RGB-LED backlight could be used - but a
white LED one.
The result of the evaluation is that the display indeed makes use of a
(pseudo) white LED backlight with 72% NTSC (white LED can reach up to 80%)
and the gamut volume is very close to sRGB, although the real coverage is
smaller than sRGB.
CIE 1931 area ratio coverage
sRGB 101,94% 95,17%
NTSC 72,20% 70,51%
Adobe RGB 75,57% 73,71%
The uniformity of the sample is acceptable with a maximum deviation of 8%
(lower right corner) and a maximum color deviation of 4 C (top left) from
the center. The test was done using UGRA´s udact (uniformity measurment
according to ISO 12646).
>From a closer observation of the pixel structure, the unit looks like a
typical LG S-IPS. Given the fact that LG indeed has a direct Display Port
(no DVI to LVDS conversion necessary any more) panel with white LEDs in
their roadmap, it is very likely that this panel is the basis for the Cinema
24 LED.
