Hello Markus,

When using tiffgamut, I place all my files (Argyll .exe, copies of ICC profiles and TIF images) in the same folder, near the root (C:\Temp).
I get the same error messages you mention.

It does not compute the gamut volume as a single number, but gives a gamut extent in the form of L*a*b* coordinates which enclose a volume (look for a .gam file). It can also generate a VRML 3D image (.wrl) of the same data.

The way I understand tiffgamut is that it wraps an icc profile around the image gamut, with the maximum gamut being the profile itself. As a consequence, all other image data, out of the profile gamut, is clipped.

I made the following test:
I saved two TIF files containing the same RGB coordinates, but one file assigned with the sRGB profile and the other with ProPhoto.
Since the ProPhoto file describes a larger gamut than the sRGB one, I expected a larger enclosed gamut. However, the gamut files are exactly the same. I used Relative Colorimetric (-ir flag) or Abs-Col (-ia) without significant differences. I asked the question to the utility author and am waiting for a response.

Hi,

this might be a stupid question but where does tiffgamut place the gamut and VRML files. I was running it with:

tiffgamut -v -w <path to AdobeRGB1998.icc> image.tif

It calculates the volume of the gamut but I cannot find the gamut file. It gives two warnings:

TIFFReadDirectory: Warning, image.tif: wrong data type 1 for "XMLPacket"; tag ignored.
TIFFReadDirectory: Warning, image.tif: unknown field with tag 34665 (0x8769) encountered.

I've dumped all the binaries in /usr/local/bin, btw.

Thanks,

Markus
