Agreed. It is entirely possible and usually the case that different
Rendering Intents in a given profile sweep out different B2A gamuts.
Therefore it is entirely appropriate, indeed, necessary that the gamut
alarm should change to reflect this dependency.

This time I disagree - where you start is all that matters, not the
connections!
Any color value presented to any profile Rendering Intent will get assigned
an inking value. So how do you determine if this color is in or out of
gamut for this RI? Might the criteria be that if the inking doesn't
compute back to the original color it was out-of-gamut to begin with?
Well, that might be valid for Relative/Absolute Colorimetric where the ICC
spec requires in-gamut pts to be inked colorimetrically. But it wouldn't
work with Perceptual or Saturation Intents where in-gamut pts not only can
move around but they really should move around to produce pleasing images.
For images then, what is needed is a way of computing the gamut swept out
by the B2A transform for a given RI. Once you have that gamut, you can
then ask it whether the ORIGINAL color (Tokyo color as it were) is in or
out of gamut. Any intermediate colors which reflect image processing are
not germane to the question of whether the original color was in or out.
