Mike Adams' post yesterday caught my eye. He says --
"I spoke to a photographer today who gave me an earful about her brand
new Epson R800 not being able to print application color-managed from
Leopard. Specifically not being able to turn off color management in
the print driver.
"I remember an involved discussion not long ago about a similar issue,
but I wasn't paying close attention and of course I've now deleted the
relevant posts.
"Anyone care to shed some light? Is this as common an issue as she
says? If so, is there a fix or a work-around available?"
The gurus at adobe forums-->macintosh photoshop, and others, have been
saying for some months that Leopard is broken as far as printing from
Photoshop to Epson printers is concerned and
they recommend printing from a Tiger (Max OS 10.4) system. I don't
recall any mention of paper types they use, , etc there. So I've done
some experiments.
I rebuilt a Mac OS 10.4.11 system on an external drive, downloaded a
fresh Tiger-compatible Epson R1800 driver (v. 3.0 aAs) and fresh
profiles for glossy and matte papers, and reset the printing system
and rebooting before installing all the new stuff. To summarize, I'm
running OS 10.4.11 on an intel macbook pro with a 2.4 GHz core duo
chip, Photoshop CS 3 v.10.0.1 and printing to an Epson R1800. The LCD
screen is decently calibrated.
Printing with photoshop managing colors and printer controls off, the
colors are, well, OK, I guess. BUT-- changing ONLY the printer
profile from SPR1800 prmgglossy.icc to SPR 1800 EnMte BstPhoto.icc
results in horribly discolored prints, with dark areas flooded with
blue and cyan ink. The results are just as bad with Tiger as with
Leopard. Finally, selecting
ColorSync in the Print-->Color Management menu along with Photoshop
Manages Color in the photoshop print window produces similarly
discolored prints.
All the other settings -- rendering intent, black point compensation,
match print colors, etc doesn't really make much of a difference. The
bottom line, for me, is that I can manage to print on glossy paper
with better results from Tiger than Leopard, but I can't use any other
kind of paper-- emhanced matterm double-sided matte, watercolor, etc
from either Leopard or Tiger.
A pointer back to earlier discussions would be appreciated.
