I should have made it clear that this was a test I devised to see the
changing gamut warning when changing rendering intent from perceptual
to relative colorimetric.
I create a color gradient in ProPhotoRGB. I set up to proof printing
on Epson Premium Luster, using the Premium profiles from Epson. I use
a Hue and Saturation adjustment layer to desaturate the gradient so
that there are both in gamut and out of gamut colors.
I zoom in on a boundary where the gamut warning is showing out of
gamut colors. I then use Proof Setup to toggle back and forth between
rendering intents. While I see the in gamut colors change when
switching between perceptual and relative colorimetric, the boundary
never moves.
I would have assumed that some colors that were out of gamut in
relative colorimetric, which caused the gamut warning to be gray where
these colors are located, would become in gamut after the perceptual
rendering intent was applied. The gray pattern never seems to change.
No area of the image seems to become in gamut after the perceptual
rendering intent is applied.
There must be something wrong with my logic.

It could mean a number of things depending on the profiles involved.
And it could depend on the test image you are using (does it have
out of
gamut colors to start with).
Right now, you haven't provided enough information for us to
determine what
you're seeing.

I am printing an image with out of gamut colors to an inkjet printer.
As I look at the Gamut Warning and change the rendering intent from
Perceptual to Relative Colorimetric, I do not see no change in the
boundary between in gamut and out of gamut colors. I interpret that
to
mean that no out of gamut colors are being moved into gamut by the
Perceptual intent.
I do see that the proof colors do change, but the boundary doesn't.
Help me understand this.
