MacBook pro monitor gone crazy

I just updated my 10.5.1 macbook pro 17" (which otherwise was working
fine) with MacBook MacBook Pro software update 1.1,
QuicktimeBroadcaster 1.5.2 and Security Update 2007-009 1.1 yesterday.
After the restart the monitor was weird and contrasty, on a scale of
0-255 everything from 222-255 or so is completely white and the blacks
close down too so everything from around 50-0 is pitch black.
This is regardles of whether I use the standard Color LCD profile or a
custom display profile (Eye One Match).
And this holds true in every application, both Photoshop, preview as
well as the OS X UI and parallels with all win applications.
Building a new profile is undoable; in the graphic window of Eye one
Match after calibration the curve looks like a 3 colored bolt of
lightning, or a hilltop someone has severly chopped up with an axe
(not really the smooth curve you generally need to put it mildly) -
and the colors look that way too.
I've zapped the P-Ram several times, tried loading various profiles on
in the display panel but to no avail.
Restarting in safe-boot mode doesn't help either.
When I open the digitalcolor meter I can easily measure the tones that
were supposed to be there, but they are all washed out/closed down on
screen.
It would seem like some kind of weird gamma curve has been applied in
the graphics card, I just can't figure out where or how to get rid of
it so ANY help would be appreciated..
Thanks in advance,
