I use a Xerox 250 w/Spire but it's a bustle configuration without an
integrated spectro. I've found that calibrating from the glass has
inconsistent results that of course cause color inconsistencies, at
least it does here. We do a fair amount of picky, agency work on this
printer/copier and unfortunately have to send out hard-copy proofs and
then match the run to them after approval. Recalibrating to each stock
as recommended causes too many color adjustments to reach the first
proof's color. I've resorted to recalibrating to only our most common
stock, and then only when there is a fuser or drum change.
I printed a target using the "direct" setting for color, reading it to
get the current state of the printer, then making a link profile for
our coated, press standard, but unfortunately can't load the link
profile. I can make my own "goal" profiles all day but they're really
just another color-result choice to the many already pre-programmed in
the Spire, and still dependent on the "drifting" glass calibration so
the results drift, a lot. Lesson learned? Purchase all the color
management options. We didn't initially since it appeared redundant;
we have lots of color management hardware/software for offset onsite.
But the bustle configuration locks out all but the glass calibration.
I'd love to have a workaround other than purchasing an upgrade, but
haven't found one yet.
