Are you implying that, for optimal gamut mapping, today, we'd benefit by

spaces?
Yes. Of course this isn't very convenient, but that's just the nature of
the beast, and it boils down to an effort/quality tradeoff if you want to
work within the ICC dumb/passive CMM paradigm, without suffering all
its limitations. The whole process of doing per image optimized gamut
mapping can be streamlined if your prepared to put up with the slightly
higher processing time, and this constitutes a smart/active CMM.
It would be an improvement merely to create a couple of profiles optimized
for different classes of source gamut (e.g. at its most crude, one for
additive device gamuts, one for subtractive device gamuts, etc.)
If, for instance, I have a collection of RGB images, say in PhotodiscRGBI
space, which was popular with Photodisc images at one point, you're saying
that, in order to get optimal gamut mapping between PhotodiscRGBI and, say,
my lowly HP or Canon printer profile, I'd benefit from creating an ArgyllCMS
devicelink profile that would convert from PhotodiscRGBI to HP or Canon?
Yes, that's getting closer to the ideal. The hierarchy goes something like
this:
Static gamut map from a generalized source gamut (ie. ICC)
Static gamut map from a specific source device gamut.
Static gamut map from a specific source image gamut.
Dynamic gamut map from from a specific source image gamut.
By "dynamic gamut map" I mean a gamut mapping that varies spatially over
the image.
