I am not sure this is true.
In Windows something is seeing the printer has changed subtly. Still the
same printer, but not the same printer. In Mac with the Epson driver that
does not happen with-out reloading the driver. I do not use GP so I am not
sure how you deal with that.
I'm pretty sure it returns the same device ID, so the OS shouldn't be
getting confused. The driver can (but doesn't have to) query for what
black ink cartridge is installed, using remote mode commands. It
could just as easily use the appropriate settings for whatever it
finds, or let the user specify which kind of ink is installed.
I cannot think of another set of printers that duplicate what is going on
here. Which might be the reason Apple has not felt the need to address the
issue.
The Stylus Photo 2200 also has an interchangeable black cartridge.
