roger, thanks for your input.
forget border. what i meant by images in a layout: the group is
interspersed
on a grid; there is background fill between images, as well as
surrounding
the grid—the entire background of the window.
this question is partially subjective: i'm looking for heuristics.
assuming R=G=B & x:[0...255] (& that the question is still of
interest) how might
one wish to vary x with respect to image content & viewing environment?

I'd set up three adjustment layers, one using K, one using W and one
using
R=G=B=127. This is actually the best way around the monitor uniformity
issue. Try all three, successively. But I'm afraid the effect would
be most
visible on the image closest to the border and least visible on the
images
in the center of the group? That's why I'd set it up using one image
at at
time, using the three different adjustment layers.
