I have been calibrating monitors for about 10 years and making printing
profiles about as long.
Before purchasing the Dell 30" I had a bunch of Samsung's here (only because
I could return them to BestBuy). I own EyeOne, Spyder II, Spyder III.
The Samsungs took endless tweeking of their large array of controls and then
I could only get an approximate match from the best one BestBuy had. Red was
a big problem. (Yes, I know that one shouldn't expect much of a $600 24"
monitor, but they were there for free experimenting and you never know.)
All three of the calibrators work with the Dell. It has few controls (only
backlight) but doesn't need any. I was really worried about this until I
tried it. Stunning straight out of the box (automatically loaded a Dell
profile into my MacPro).
However, for printing it definitely needs calibration to get the curve and
the white point right.
I heard that 6500 should be the calibration target for my Solux 4700K lamps
and that is true for the EyeOne and the Spyder II. However, setting the the
Spyder III to 4700K, gamma 2.2 and brightness 120 gives me an extremely good
match to my 9800 printer using my own profiles (or Bill Atkinson's). And
there is brightness to spare even at 4700K.
There are no evenness problems with my sample of the Dell. Only real
complaint is that I can't see (or feel) the backlight controls in the dark.
