Hello Marco,
Here are a few precisions relative to how PatchTool works. I know that you
already know a lot of the information below, but this makes for a somewhat
more self-contained and readable answer!
I make a distinction between checking the "monitor" and "display"
calibrations. By "monitor" I mean just the hardware (the peripheral) part on
which we look at the image. This includes the white point and the LUT that
was loaded in the graphics card when the computer booted. All calibration
programs make you adjust these settings in one way or another, and they
generate their ICC profile only once this is done.
By "Display", I mean the associated "monitor" + ICC profile assigned to the
peripheral.
In non-color-managed applications, which do not take into account the
display ICC profile, the white point and LUT (which essentially linearizes
the greys) will always give you a partial calibration.
I realize that this wording can be confusing, and suggestions are welcomed!
Then, following the above definitions logic, you may want to check how your
"monitor" behaves for non-color-managed applications, where the system will
use the set white point and LUT. You would first select a "Quick Test" which
uses RGB data (neutral ramps and/or individual R, G, and B, ramps. Secondly,
you should select the same source and destination profiles, which is
equivalent to send uncorrected RGB values to the display, in effect
by-passing the display (peripheral) ICC profile.
If you want to check how your monitor behaves for color-managed applications
(checking the "monitor profile's internal reliability" as you mentioned)
using the "Quick Test" menu, you should select generic RGB or sRGB as source
space and your default display profile as the destination profile. In this
case, the program will use the selected source profile to convert the source
RGB to the PCS (L*a*b* or XYZ, D50). In the Compare window which opens after
measurements, the reference is computed according to the source profile.
For a more thorough test, you can make measurements with custom lists of any
size (you own, from a spreadsheet or word processor, or any CGATS file like
IDEAlliance IT8.7/4 reference files). When you open a color list containing
color data in any of the recognized format (spectral, L*a*b*, XYZ, etc.),
this list is converted internally to XYZ. When you make a display check
using this list, using the "PatchTool file" menu, the program directly uses
XYZ (or L*a*b*) in D50, bypassing any selected source profile. You will see
that the source profile field shows "L*a*b* / PCS" when doing the actual
measurements.
Regards,
Danny Pascale

Mike,
I don't have any experience with the Color Navigator software, but you can
use custom RGB and Lab lists with Danny Pascale's PatchTool to test your
monitor profile. The procedure is described in pages 42-49 of the
"PatchTool_Help.pdf" user's manual.
I believe that the way to "validate" the monitor profile (if that is the
correct term, which is debatable) is to open a custom CGATS RGB or Lab
list
in PatchTool, then launch the "Display Check" command (Tools > Display
Check).
To check the monitor profile's internal reliability, I think that one has
to
set the monitor profile as both Source and Destination, with either RGB or
Lab lists; if one wishes to use a Lab list as just *external* reference, I
believe that in that case the source profile should be set as Lab.
If Danny is reading this, he can possibly either confirm or correct me.
Thank you.
