Hello Marco and Roger,

Yes, a design decision made at some point. The priority was to be able to measure the monitor output and not the internals of the profile, which is a deeper level of analysis that is not required by most users. Dealing with color management is difficult for all, users and developers; even Adobe uses different interfaces across its apps, to the point that Adobe app users have to "experiment" with settings in order to understand what they do.

In this context, the added features of PatchTool are added progressively, as dictated by perceived needs and customer requests. In parallel, App-Notes on monitor and printer certification using PatchTool were written, as a "follow-me" guide, to show how to easily perform a procedure which could previously be done only by experts.

The first PatchTool version did not support monitor profiles for display, while the second now support monitor profiles and adds the display check capabilities. In the present version you can assign preset RGB spaces when you input files which contain only RGB data, (and do not contain another device independant data format such as spectrum, XYZ, Lab, etc.). I agree it would be nice to be able to assign "any" profile in such a case, but, you have to realize that in most CGATS files lying around us where RGB data can found, the RGB origin is quite nebulous, and corresponds to no known profile. Of course, when you define your own RGB list from scratch, and you want to assign it the monitor profile instead of one of the five standard RGB spaces, then this cannot be done. It is on the list of things to add...

Thanks for your comments!

Danny

Marco,

In french we say : "les voies du seigneur sont impénétrables". Loosely
translated in english : the ways of the lord cannot be penetrated. (please
don't anyone quote me out of context!) Why PatchTool chose not to offer the
choice of monitor profile, to *assign* to a list of RGB device values, is
not immediately obvious. But not confusing, if you ask me. It is a software
design decision, as far as I can see.

Yes, but it would be nice to have a choice to do it either way, and not be
forced to do it in a way that excludes assigning the monitor profile --
which is something that I'm still not clear whether PatchTool's Display
Check can do for *custom* RGB lists.

How's that for confusing? Parbleu... :-)

Marco
