Forgot to mention that rendering intent can play a huge part in what
you're describing.

I have recently created a new press profile using ProfileMaker
5.08. I am getting very good results as far as the proofer
matching the press sheets used to build the profile. My problem is
with the RGB to CMYK conversions. Converting in Photoshop from
Adobe RGB 1998 to my profile, I get poor results in the out of
gamut blues and violets. But if I first convert from Adobe RGB
1998 to Gracol 2006 Coated v2, and then to my profile, the results
are pretty good.

I am a little lost as to how to correct this. Are there certain
settings in ProfileMaker, such as gamut mapping or optical
brightner, that would improve my profile?
What you're seeing is the difference between ProfileMaker and your
gamut mapping choice and Monaco Profiler (the GRACoL profile was
built with Profiler).
Build profiles using all three gamut mappings in ProfileMaker and
see what works best for you ("Colorful" is the gamut mapping most
people use).
