The narrow format makes it possible to include the Color Control
Patches and the Gray Scale along the edge of an artwork during
imaging. This served several purposes; gray scale references for
exposure and neutral balance, the color scale guides the color
separator and can aid with exposure, and the appearance of the color
scale in color confirms the type of capture with near neutral artworks.
Until the ColorChecker series charts are available in narrow formats
the Kodak products still have a place. They are also inexpensive,
which gives them an advantage for cash strapped institutions.

In principles, it is fair to say that, given the growing popularity
of the
Munsell products (ColorChecker and so on), we will see less and less
of
those Kodak targets.
I wonder what the advantages were? Other than the grayscale being
made of
density increments corresponding to equal f-stops on a lens.
