I am told that HP is now researching the cause and extent of the

possibly offer a replacement if warranted

Thank you Rick and Andrew for the quick and non-bureaucratic help. I'll

Klaus
I just want to keep you posted:
I contacted HP Europe on Thursday and got a new panel (head) on Friday.
The new one is almost perfect: Under normal viewing conditions one has
to try hard to see any non-uniformities. When one displays dark grays in
a completely darkened environment and hides everything else (Menu bars,
palettes and so on) one will see very slight, horizontal lightness
variations but no color casts.
In matters of uniformity the new HP Dreamcolor panel clearly beats every
other wide gamut display I've seen so far (and I've seen almost all
available models). It is at least as uniform as the "narrow-gamut" EIZO
CG210 and much better than the newer EIZO "Digital Uniformity Equalizer"
models (CG211, CG221, CG241).
The gamut is tremendous. I've never seen reds or magentas like this
before. Also the contrast range is higher than everything else I've seen
before on a LCD display.
It's hard to find any shortcomings: there is a small area (as small as
the tip of the little finger) where on can see a periodic pattern of
tiny red dots, but it's only visible in darkened environment on a
completely black screen. (I didn't notice anything like that on the
first panel).
There is also some kind of noise pattern (like brushed metal) in very
dark, uniform grays (approx. R=G=B=4), again only visible in darkened
environment (this effect was also present on the first panel).
Under normal viewing conditions, the HP Dreamcolor is close to
perfection: It has very little viewing angle dependency, great
uniformity and an unbeatable gamut and contrast range. I can highly
recommend it.
However, it borders to wastage to drive it with only 8 bits per channel,
all the more as there is no L* TRC preset. I wonder if a new MacBook
Pro with Display Port would exhaust its 10 bits per channel capability?
