I try to stay away from unclear definitions as much as possible -- so I will
propose the following one, in the hope that it's not obscure:
Calibration brings a device to a state that is known, predictable,
repeatable and reasonably stable.
Profiling describes that state in mathematical terms (either in a matrix or
in look-up tables).
Both calibration and profiling need to be performed at regular intervals
because device behavior drifts in time, due to changes in environmental
conditions, consumables, maintenance and/or obsolescence.
