Uli,
There are two colour spaces involved with Lightroom - (1) the working space of the application itself, which is kind of ProPhoto but with gamma of 1.0 (rather than 1.8) in order to match the native 1.0 gamma of raw camera files; this is hardwired; and (2) the choice of working space gamuts for the output image exported from Lightroom - which is where you have the choice of three gamuts as I mentioned before. The only default is the Lightroom internal working space I mentioned as (1) above. For colour spaces (2), there is no "default" regardless of how the application comes packaged. This is PURELY user preference, perhaps depending on the kind of output. For example, I always export in ProPhoto because then I am sure to have preserved the full colour palette, given that my Epson 3800 with K3 inks and Ilford GFS or Hahnmuhle Baryta or Epson EFP has a gamut which in some places exceeds Adobe RGB(98). Exporting in ProPhoto also means that I am carrying into
Photoshop a pretty accurate portrayal of what Lightroom created because the colour spaces are quite matched. So if I'm looking for "accuracy" from capture to arrival in Photoshop, I would keep the chain of colour space settings as consistent as possible. This breaks down when we come to print, because at that point colour space compression is necessary and there are compromises, unless of course it happens to be an image whose gamut is no wider than what the printer can handle without "massaging".

But I agree with you that it's not much of an experiment to select a
better color space. As I said, I did, cross-checked, and only when I
found that ProPhoto didn't alter the results at all (max deltaE
difference < 0.5%, which is smaller than measurement repeatability), I
sticked to the default, in accordance with the review principles.
Bye
Uli
