Whatever the specific implementation, it doesn't affect my (pretty
straightforward) point that *if* DNG profiles had some
technological advantage by design, the fact that they don't provide
better results than other profiles in my testing would actually
make them look worse, not better.
My comments were about the calibration step. The only way to test
this is to compare several units of a given model (e.g., a Nikon
D300) and see how consistent the color is across them. If you only
test a single unit of a given model then you are not really testing
the effectiveness of the calibration step.
The ability (or lack thereof) of different RAW converters to achieve
consistent results across several units of the camera types they
support already with their default settings/"profiles" is indeed
something my test was not concerned with; it did not evaluate
calibration explicitly.
Implicitly, you could obviously expect a certain advantage of a RAW
converter with such an ability, compared to one without it, when it
comes to producing metrologically accurate images, because it has a
cleaner set of values from which the camera profile can operate, but
of course, this advantage will only really show if the test camera
happens to clearly deviate from the average behavior of its type.
