HDTV monitor calibration...

Some time ago I asked the group about HDTV monitor calibration.
I was told that it is output referenced and that there were certain DVD
that could be used for home calibration. I purchased "Digital Video
Essentials" and calibrated my HDTV monitor. In my opinion this DVD has
a very poor human interface and relies on visual assessment to calibrate
the monitor. It seems a very crude and subjective way to calibrate a
monitor.
I have also been told that their are two organizations (THX and IHF??)
that certify technicians to come to your home and calibrate your HDTV
for a fee of $300 to $500 dollars.
I have an EyeOne Display colorimeter which I use to calibrate my
computer monitors.. I have an adapter that allows me to drive the HDMI
input of my HDTV from the DVI output of my Macintosh computer.
Given these facts...Is it possible to write software to put a standard
LUT in my computer's graphic card and to drive my HDTV monitor from my
Macintosh and measure the output on the screen using my EyeOne
colorimeter? It would then lead me through each adjustment on the HDTV
monitor. If this is possible...Why has no one done it?
Thanks in advance,
Ray Maxwell
