Rich,
Now that I posted my "educated" theory about the limitations of "any"
affordable, off-the-shelf instruments, I was contacted offlist to the
effect that the i1 Pro would not suffer the same spectral mismatch that,
say, a plain, unmatched filter-based colorimeter like the i1 Display would.
True or false? I confess my knowledge of light measurements has its limits
so I'll take my earlier comments back until I know better what to think of
all this.
> Yup - as far as hardware goes, a matched colorimeter would be ideal.
See? I'm not so sure of this anymore.

Beats me too :(

Me too. And I have to give it to HP to have superlative color scientists on
board -- Jack Holmes, Jan Morovic, Nathan Moroney, only to name a few. So
they can't totally screw up. Can they?
> I haven't seen any gross non-uniformity,
I'll bet this monitor is very uniform and, with hindsight, I was probably
misled by some snob, tech person.
All I can say in this regards is, I was told Eizo's top CG models are
"hand-calibrated" in factory, in Japan. I am not totally privy to the
details behind this procedure but I gather that the monitors just don't roll
off the assembly line without going through some final stringent luminance
and chromaticity tuning, guaranteeing tight uniformity in the field. I'll
stop at tight because, in all honesty, the Eizo's I worked on are not
perfect. I realize I am very demanding but, hey, they are quite a notch
above many, many brands and models I encounter every day at clients and in
my practive. Probably as good as can the present CCFL technology can be.
Thank's for these additional comments,
Roger
