I detect a discrepancy between the two statements: Graeme says that

Colorimeters don't split things up into as many bands, they still use
bands. The Spyder3 uses seven bands, the EyeOne Display2 uses four,
the Huey uses three. But the basic concept being described is that
breaking something up into a large number of small measurements is
useful if you need fine details, but less accurate if you need overall
values. So a spectro may be a bit less accurate for measuring broad
colors, and especially their luminance, than a colorimeter. On the
other hand, the colorimeter is not prepared to provide detailed
spectral data of the type needed for purposes like determining the
phosophors used in a fluorescent lamp.
