As I figured. Then why on earth care about the working space encoding
which is far more important.
The idea of altering the working space do reduce banding on a display
seems counter-productive. The current capture device I'm using (5DMII)
has a great "gamut potential" and the output device I use (Epson with
K3 and HDR inks) again has a gamut that, along with my Raw converter
convinces me that ProPhoto RGB is the most appropriate working space
and we know its got a 1.8 TRC. I'm not about to use that TRC for the
display, making most of this discussion moot.
So yes, the working space and the TRC of the display are and should be
agnostic unless you've got a piss poor display and care more about it
than the final output.
