Custom profiles for various printer papers

I'm a bit confused - as usual - as to where custom icc profiles for various papers associated with a particular printer should be placed, i.e., complete path, please. Presently they are in /System Folder/ ColorSync Profiles, and work well there, but recently I've seen reference to a different placement and am wondering what is preferred.
