Well not exactly. God forbid you should put a piece of frosted plastic into a land fill when the monitor dies.

That would have been a nice thing to have, even as just an option.

I have no proof to back this, but I have a feeling that the glossy screen was the result of a decision on the part of Apple based purely on design -- to make the "shiny" monitor more appealing to the average user (who is likely to be uneducated on what is best for optimal results in professional imaging).
