Hi,
When I set my ATI driver (in System Preferences) to treat my monitor
as TV, the result was like you said.

Subject: Kinda OT: Display preference setting renders display unresponsive
Hi,
This is kinda off-topic, for which I apologize, but the amount of monitor discussion suggested that it might at least be useful. I didn't see any other lists that seemed more appropriate.
In the lab here we have a MacPro with two monitors attached, a Dell LCD and a Samsung 2233 LCD. Each has its own video card. Originally, both were connected via DVI.
Oddly, the Samsung came up in System Preferences as if it were a TV. The refresh rate popup listed "60 Hz (NTSC)", and an Options tab offered an "Overscan" checkbox, which was selected. (The refresh popup also listed 100, 110, and 120 Hz, but selecting any of those caused the Samsung to behave as if no cable were connected, although the Mac still saw it connected.)
When I deselected the Overscan checkbox, it was as if I had disconnected the Samsung. System Preferences no longer saw it, nor did System Profiler. Rebooting didn't bring the monitor back.
The only way to make the Samsung visible to the Mac Pro was to plug it into another video out, the DisplayPort on the same card, or either connector on the other card.
So I presume that 'Overscan' preference is being persisted somewhere on the Mac, and I need to restore the preference to the default in order to get things back to normal.
So, my question is: Does anyone know where this kind of setting would be stored, and how I might clear it?
(And if anyone can suggest why OS X seems to think it's a TV, and/or why the 100/110/120 Hz settings don't work though the monitor supports them, that would also be appreciated.)
Thanks!
- Jon
