Currently EFI XF uses a contone driver for the 79/9900, which
employes Epson's screening--very good, in my opinion. EFI tends not
to release halftone drivers unless the engineers feel they can build
a really superior one. As you can imagine, this is no picnic on a 10-
color printer. They did build such a driver for the HP Z3200, an 11-
color printer, and it was extremely well done. My understanding is
that they will release a halftone driver for the SP 79/9900 soon;
this was partly in response to a need for a sharper "dot" in the 1-
bit printing, which is bundled in the Epson OEM package.
A number of RIPs of course use the inline spectros of both the latest
Epsons and the HP Z printers. EFI XF does indeed print the
verification label right in the slug of the proof. This feature is
still available only for the Epsons, and one must have the Color
Verifier option. I can report from personal experience that the
entire system works very, very smoothly, and I receive no calls from
my customers.
XF v. 4.1 is due in late Jan/early Feb. Expect further enhancements
at that time.

Hi Roger,
I don't remember that post, but EFI currently uses Epson screening as
far as
I know. And... about the screening being "built-in", that sounds like
malarkey to me. Of course, there is always the possibility that I
am off
base.
GMG CP05 does allow "roll-back" for measurement, but not for "label
printing"... although I suspect this is a matter of time. Also GMG
will only
use their screening with all x900 colors in combination with their own
media. EFI will make an "on-proof label", but does not yet have their
own
screening (I suspect that, eventually they will... just not yet). The
interesting thing is that Kodak has done a good job of getting
everything
working well and bringing it to market, where other RIPs are still
developing these features. It is not to say it will be this way
forever, but
I believe that Kodak is a front-runner when it comes to x900
support. In
fairness to ORIS, I have only heard mixed reports about Color
Tuner. Not
having tested it myself... I can't say for sure what it does and
doesn't do.

Marc,
I'll admit I'm not as familiar with the Kodak "KPS" Rip as I am with
GMG.
But if I remember correctly, there was a post on the List, in
spring, where
someone was telling us about EFI Colorproof XF v4 now offering their
own,
proprietary screening, for the e9900. Recently, a Fuji support
specialist
explained that the e9900 offered these new advanced digital screening
"built-in", in hardware, meaning that the host application, somehow,
no
longer needs to "screen" the data prior to sending to the printer?
BTW, don't Oris and EFI (and GMG 05?) also have the capabilities of
rolling
back the media in to measure a printed control strip with the on-
board
instrument, and then roll the media back out to print a "quality
control"
ticket? How is KPS approach unique?
Best / Roger
